Petridou Eleni

Eleni Petridou was born in Athens. She graduated from the Athens University Medical School in 1976 and obtained her Master’s Degree in the Harvard School of Public Health and her PhD in the Athens University Medical School. She is a board certified pediatrician and social medicine professional. Currently, she is Professor of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology and Director of the Centre for Research and Prevention of Injuries (CEREPRI) in the Dept of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics as well as research consultant in the 1st Dept of Cardiology of the Athens University Medical School, mainly in longevity related issues. She has hold research appointments at the Harvard School of Public Health and served in the Supervising Committee of the Harvard Injury Control Research Center. As of today, her principal international collaborations are with the Dept of Clinical Epidemiology and MEB at the Karolinska Institute as well as the Childhood Leukemia International Consortium (CLIC) leading the OUTCOMES Interest Group.

She had developed the Nationwide Registry for Childhood Hematological and Brain Tumor Malignancies (narechem.gr), the Emergency Dept Injury Surveillance System (EDISS) and extensive research data bases, such as the Velestino-study on the health of the elderly, from where data for ~70 Doctoral Theses derive. She has published more than 330 research papers (>4500 citations, IF~800, h-index 30) and has received several awards for her work; she has served or currently serves as Member of the Editorial Board in peer reviewed journals, such as the Journal of Aging and Health, Accident Analysis and Prevention and Injury Prevention; has reviewed hundreds of submitted manuscripts, applications for funding and scholarships nationally and internationally.

Prof Petridou is a founding member and President of the Hellenic Society for Social Pediatrics and Health Promotion with branches in the 7 cities hosting Medical Schools across Greece and past President of the European Society for Social Pediatrics. She devoted energy for building coalitions and proposed the priorities for an injury prevention strategic plan based on world experts’ opinions while chairing the Working Party on Accidents and Injuries of the European Union and coordinated the European Network for Safety among Elderly (EUNESE). A great believer of international collaboration in bridging the gap from theory to practice in order to combat the injury epidemic, she also headed the process for the development the “European Code against Injuries”.
